HISTORY OF THE BRANDS
Ever since A Bathing Ape (a.k.a. BAPE) launched back in 1993, Nigo & Sk8thing revolutionized streetwear forever. Their artistic vision allowed them to bring Franklin J Schaffner’s 1968’s ‘Planet of The Apes’ to life via apparel, accessories, footwear and more, featuring the tagline “Ape Shall Never Kill Ape”. A Bathing Ape and Nowhere helped define the Harajuku fashion of the 90’s with Nigo as one of the main figureheads.
Collaborating with International brands like Pepsi, Stash, Kaws, Stussy, James Lavelle and more, A Bathing Ape propelled itself into the mainstream — being worn by celebrities such as Jermaine Dupri, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, The Clipse, Curren$y, Robin Williams, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Nick Cannon, Notorious B.I.G, Juelz Santana, Jay-Z, and many more.
Billionaire Boys Club (a.k.a. BBC) came to life in 2003 when Pharrell Williams was introduced to Nigo by their respective jeweler, Jacob & Co.. They immediately built a powerful friendship, becoming an iconic duo in the fashion industry. Nigo, Sk8thing and Toby Feltwell helped bring Pharrell’s vision to life, creating the brand with a transcendent message “Wealth is of the heart and mind, not the pocket.” The ICE CREAM sub-brand came into addition in 2005, featuring brighter colors and more innovative designs, including footwear. Pharrell promoted the various brands through his music, cameos, and interviews, allowing them to gain more notoriety in pop-culture.
In 2011, Nigo sold the majority of A Bathing Ape to I.T Limited (a Hong Kong conglomerate), while remaining creative director and simultaneously transitioning to his new brand Human Made (also co-owned by Pharrell). Nigo parted ways with BAPE for good in 2013. In 2012, both Pharrell and Nigo sold their stakes in the company Billionaire Boys Club to mega branding conglomerate, Iconix. Pharrell re-purchased his beloved brand in 2016, regaining full control of the company’s direction. Since then, BBC has brought back re-makes of their most coveted designs and carry Human Made in their retail stores.
The two creatives did not end their fashion legacies with BAPE & BBC/ICE CREAM… In addition to Human Made, Nigo became the creative director for Uniqlo's UT brand in 2014, and in 2020 he collaborated with Virgil Abloh to create a Human Made x Louis Vuitton capsule collection. In September 2021, Nigo was appointed as the new artistic director for Kenzo. As for Pharrell, his impressive portfolio includes having worked with luxury brands including Moncler, adidas, G-Star RAW, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., and more. In 2023, Pharrell was named creative director for Louis Vuitton menswear — another brand he had already collaborated with in the past.
Needless to say, Nigo & Pharrell have established themselves as legends in their fashion careers, and it should come as no surprise that their original work is cherished as valued collector’s items.
